about

"Rambling Beauty" comes from a fragment in H.M. Belden's "Ballads and Songs of Missouri." Belden comments, "From a manuscript sent to me in 1905 of which I unfortunately failed to record the provenience." Try that one next time you lose something. No tune was offered, so we came up with an inappropriately cheerful one of our own. "Dark Hills" comes from the poem of the same name by Edwin Arlington Robinson. "George Collins," "Drowsy Sleeper," and "Johnny Oh Johnny" come from the collection of Anne and Frank Warner and the singing of Lee Monroe Presnell. "As I Travel" comes from the singing of Roscoe Holcomb. Various versions of "The Dying Californian" were printed in 19th century collections of pupular songs and 20th century collections of folk songs. "The Sacred Harp" credits the words to "Kate Harris - 1850" and the tune to "Bell and Dinkard - 1859."
